Thézan and it's history

The Languedoc plain has always been an thoroughafare for peoples and Thézan's situation there has often led to it being involved in wars, in the path of invasions or simply being joigned by new arrivals.

In the century the region was repopulated by spaniards thanks to a system instituted by Charlemagne, whereby spaniards who refused to submit to muslim rule in their country, and who had fought against the Sarrasins, could after thirty years become owners of abandoned land on condition that they clearead and restored it. The surnames in Thézan reflect this still and even today and they are known locally as 'Lous Espagnols'

The first Lord of Thézan, which was one of the principalities of the Viscount of Béziers, was Alfaric Guillem who lived in the XI century and owned several fiefs and castles. His son, Arnald married Mathilde Athon, daughter of the Viscount of Béziers.

In 1209 he refused to submit to Simon de Montfort and gaves as a bond a knight called Pons de Thézan.
In 1221 the inhabitants of Thézan were excommunicated.

The 14th of october 1226, Pons de Thézan and Pierre de Corneilhan swore an oath of allegiance to the king before the Bishop of Béziers, in the chapel of Aspiran de Ravanes which lies near the domaine.

In 1247 Guillem, Pons's son, took part in the abdication of the last Viscount of Béziers.
In 1287 Pons recevied an ordrer from the King to Fortify the castle of Thézan.
In 1300 Jean de Levis became lord of the Castle and sold it to Lord Bringuier de Saint-Geniès.
In 1301 the inhabitants of Thézan bought 2200 livres.

Later the grand campaigns caused such devastation in the region that in 1361 the people did not dare to leave the remparts to harvest the grapes.

Duing the XVI century Thézan was much sort after and was besieged many times, particulary in 1587 by Marechal de Joyeuse and in 1588 by the Duke de Montmorency.

To find out more about Thézan's history, there are two works by Mr. Aimet OURMET : volume 1 'Tesano en bas Languedoc' and volume 2 'Thézan-les-Béziers, these were the good time" also the work of Mr. Roger GUY " A history of Thézan-les-Béziers'.
These documents are avaible far consultation at the médiathèque Fernand Roques.
